Pinyin to Chinese: type pinyin, pick characters

Type pinyin without tones and pick the Chinese words and characters you mean. It works like a pinyin keyboard and is made for words and short phrases. Below the tool: how pinyin input works and how to switch on the keyboard your device already has.

Tap a word, or press 1 to 9. Space takes the first one, Enter keeps the letters as typed.

Characters

The first suggestion is the most common word for those letters, not always the one you mean, so look before you pick. Type a word or a short phrase at a time.

This tool runs in your browser. Nothing you type or paste is sent to a server.

How typing Chinese with pinyin works

Pinyin writes the sounds of Mandarin with Latin letters: 你好 is nǐ hǎo, 中国 is Zhōngguó. It is also how most people in mainland China type. A pinyin input method lets you type the sound on an ordinary keyboard and then shows the characters that match, so that you can pick one. This page is a small one that runs in your browser.

Type nihao and the first suggestion is 你好. Press Space to take it, press a number to take another one, or tap it. A short phrase works too: woainizhongguo gives 我爱你中国. What you pick collects in the box next to it, ready to copy.

Why you have to choose

Mandarin has few syllables and many characters. Without tones there are only about 400 different syllables, so each one is shared by many characters: shi alone can be 是, 时, 事, 十, 市 and dozens more. The suggestions are ordered by how often each word is used, and each one shows its pinyin with tone marks, so you can tell 买 mǎi (to buy) from 卖 mài (to sell). Longer input is easier to get right: shi is a guess, laoshi is almost certainly 老师.

What it is good for, and what not

Use it for a word, a name or a short phrase when you have no Chinese keyboard at hand. Three things to know:

It is not a replacement for the keyboard built into your phone or computer. That keyboard looks at the words around the one you are typing, remembers what you write and types straight into your apps.

How to switch on the pinyin keyboard

iPhone, iPad, Mac and Windows have a pinyin keyboard built in, and on Android it is part of Gboard. The names of the menus change a little between versions:

The word list comes from the pinyin keyboard of the Android Open Source Project, used under the Apache License 2.0. The tones were added with pinyin-pro and the Traditional forms with the OpenCC tables. Sources and licences

The other way round: from characters to pinyin

This tool turns pinyin you know into characters. HanCam goes the other way. For Chinese that you cannot type or copy, on a sign, a menu or a page of a book, it reads the characters with the camera of your iPhone or iPad and shows them with pinyin and tone marks, and the meaning. The meaning is in your phone's language where Apple's on-device translation offers it, and in English otherwise.

Read Chinese you cannot copy: signs, menus, books and screenshots.

Questions and answers

How do I type Chinese with pinyin?

Type the sound of the word in Latin letters, without tones and without spaces: xiexie for 谢谢, zhongguo for 中国. Then choose the word from the suggestions with Space, a number key or a tap. Pinyin keyboards on phones and computers work the same way.

Why are there so many characters for one syllable?

Mandarin has only about 400 syllables without tones, and thousands of characters share them. shi alone can be 是, 时, 事, 十, 市 and many more. Typing a whole word narrows it down: shijian is 时间, laoshi is 老师.

How do I type ü in pinyin?

Type v: nv for 女, lvse for 绿色. After j, q, x and y the letter is written as a plain u in pinyin, so type ju, qu, xue and yue.

Can I type the tones?

You do not need to. To narrow the list you can type a letter with its tone mark: mǎ shows only third-tone characters such as 马. Pasted pinyin with tone numbers works too, for example ni3hao3. A number you type yourself picks a suggestion instead.

Can I get Traditional characters?

Yes. Switch to Traditional and the same pinyin gives 學習 for xuexi and 頭髮 for toufa. Where one Simplified character has several Traditional forms, all of them are offered: fa shows both 發 and 髮. The forms are those used in Taiwan.

Is this a replacement for a Chinese keyboard?

No. It is for a few words or a short phrase when you have no Chinese keyboard at hand. For daily typing, use the pinyin keyboard built into your phone or computer: it looks at the words around the one you are typing and types straight into your apps. How to switch it on is described above.
