Blarphone Phone support around a full-time job

I run Blaris next to a full-time job, and Blarphone is the iPhone app I use for its business phone numbers. It never rings into the day job: during the workday, callers hear a greeting and can leave a voicemail. In the evenings and at weekends, the hours I keep for Blaris, calls ring through. Everything I missed waits in one To do list until I have answered it.

Blarphone is used by Blaris only. It is not on the App Store, and there is no download and no sign-up. This page describes what it does and why it exists.

What it does

A phone that stays out of the day job

Blarphone does a few things and nothing else: it rings when I can answer, takes a message when I can't, and keeps a list of who is still waiting for me.

01

Silent at work, rings in my spare hours

A switch at the top sets Available, Busy or Schedule. Schedule follows the support hours I set: evenings and weekends. Then a call rings for 40 seconds. During the workday it doesn't ring at all, so nothing interrupts the day job; the caller hears a greeting and can leave a voicemail.

02

One To do list

Missed calls, voicemails and texts land in To do, each with Call back, Reply and Done. Calling or texting someone back clears their item, so the list only holds people who still need an answer.

03

Two numbers, one app

A US number for calls and texts and a Swedish number for texts, side by side in the same app and the same list.

04

No automatic texts, no email

Blarphone never texts a caller by itself: no auto-replies and nothing that could pass for spam. Every text someone gets from these numbers is one I wrote. It sends no email either.

05

The iPhone's own call screen

It is a native iPhone app that uses the system call screen (CallKit), so a call rings like any other, even when the phone is locked. The numbers run on Twilio, with a small backend on Cloudflare.

Why it exists

Support that fits around a normal job

I run Blaris next to a full-time job. People who use what Blaris makes sometimes need to reach a person by phone, and I want to answer them properly, at a time when I can give them my full attention, not between two meetings at work.

An ordinary phone number doesn't fit that: it rings in the middle of the workday, or it gets muted and the missed calls slip away in the call log. Blarphone keeps the two apart: the day job stays undisturbed, calls come through in the evenings and at weekends, and everything in between waits in one list, so nothing gets lost.

It is built for one person and one company, so it does exactly that.
